A Lazarus taxon is a designation used in conservation biology and ecology to describe a population or a species that emerges after it was previously considered extinct. The term is also used in paleontology to describe phenomenon that is not specific to extinction, more the sporadic nature of the the fossil record. In this context, a Lazarus taxon is an individual or taxonomic group that periodically vanishes from the fossil record; its reappearance implies it endured the period(s) of its absence.
Lazarus Taxon is an ode to human inventiveness and the fantastical imagery with which we populate our reality in the absence of an answer. It is also a glimpse at the way we show our fingerprints on our creations, the identities we assign to each entity as a reflection of its function, natural or metaphysical, and the symbols that are formed. My narrative process examines the way elements of history and mythology can be can be broken up and curated for the purpose of allegorical storytelling. This selection chronicles an exploration of femininity in a symbolic capacity as an evolving concept in contemporary art.
